as a rule, I don't believe in negative blog posts-if I don't like something I just don't say anything about it
but travel reporter contacted me the other day to ask if I had any " buy Beware " stories about travel in Sicily. I told him about a terrible experience on Bar Papisca in Canneto Beach on the island Lipari (read my post on the magical Lipari select the here ) and when I told him about the only other Penang travel in Sicily, or elsewhere in Italy.
in Switzerland, buy pottery in Taormina and get them shipped home.
Sicily is known for its spectacular pottery. They are just beautiful. Hand-painted, distinctive, unique Sicilian.
they harken to the stories of The past and at the same time is ingrained in the present.
Taormina is not just one of the most beautiful places in Sicily, but it is also one of the most beautiful places in the world. I can't wait to get back there again, hopefully next summer.
in the last year I bought some pieces of local pottery in Taormina and dragged them around Italy with me for 5 weeks before returning to the United States. I loved the pattern so much that I decided to buy a complete dinnerset as well as extra when I came back this year.
I was a little hesitant to deliver a giant order home without a trial run, so ( thankfully) I have just bought a few pieces to try out the shipping, to order and ship date place settings for 10 if all went well.

I bought 5 pieces on a shop called the Sikania Ceramiche is located Via Luigi Pirandello 18 in Taormina. The shipping was expensive-€ 65 including shipping insurance.
they informed me that it would take a month to arrive, that they have special packaging that guarantees that it all comes in one piece, and that infact had no one ever had something come broken. But don't worry-if the package does not arrive or was damaged in some way it was insurance to cover.

but not cool.
the shipment arrived stateside about 3 weeks later, and I must say the packaging was fantastic, the only problem was that when the ceramics were packed they were signs in too hard, and some of the pieces broke.

I called Sikania Ceramiche the next morning and spoke to the owner. When I told him that the pieces came broken, he said that it was impossible.
then quickly decided that he no longer understood English, and hung up.
no problem-I have a lot of friends in Italy, so I had one of them calls him and conduct the conversation in Italian. The owner said yes he understood that I had items arrive broken, and that he just needed my email or text him pictures. He gave my friend the phone number of the cell text them to and email address to email them to.

I immediately won both-texted him photos and emailed them.
both he steadfastly ignored.
he ignored the follow up emails for.
I have to say at this point that it should have been a big deal. Replace the corrupted elements-minimal cost to large-keep the customer happy, and get a giant for the rest of the set that I wanted.
had Sikania Ceramiche actually bought shipping insurance to pay me for this would not be a problem, would it?
I mean no big deal-me send back the broken pieces and just replace them. Insurance will pay for all.
which of course makes me think they didn't really buy insurance, and just lowered the extra money.
but some sellers own several shops, and so the fact that in a small place like Taormina all know each other,
there are probably others in the city are running the same dirty game.
so the way I see it you are better to buy pottery elsewhere. Buy them in Ragusa or Giardini Naxos, Siracusa or Savoca. Just not in Taormina. And maybe just buy what you can carry home in your luggage — avoid shipping fraud.

and they are everywhere.
there are many options and many shops to buy them from.
