5 myths about skin care products busted!
we all know how important it is to take care of our skin, but it is such an overwhelming amount of products on the market that just makes it more difficult to choose the best that suits our needs. So we read the labels hope that they would help us to make the right choice, but we really trust all of the claims they make? And what about the common belief that we should choose the expensive and natural products because they reportedly work better? Is it true? Read:
1. Hypoallergenic products are safer and better for sensitive skin
hypoallergenic is a word that implies that a product is milder and less likely to cause irritation and allergic reactions and so it is better for those with sensitive skin. But as I have already discussed in a previous post, hypoallergenic is just a marketing tool. The term is not regulated in any way, it is not what ingredients can and can not be used in products labeled this way and businesses do not need to prove that the products do not contain allergens. This means that cosmetic companies can just put the word hypoallergenic on each product they want, even those that contain irritating ingredients. But by reading the ingredient lists, you can easily avoid products with ingredients that you know will cause skin irritation, allergic and even acne on your skin.
2. "Dermatologically tested" products are more secure and more reliable
the term "dermatologically tested" is another marketing tool. It means that the product is tested on the skin and nothing more. They tell you if skin and how many people the product is tested, how the testicles was carried out by what the dermatologist they were performed and what the results were. And though we like to think that when a doctor supports a product has the people's best interests at heart, some dermatologists can recommend a particular product simply because he was paid to do this (obviously not all the dermatologist does, but sometimes).
3. You should use skin care products to your age group
we are often told that we need to use skin care products that are directed to our age group, i.e. teenagers should buy products aimed at teenagers, women over 50 's for mature skin etc, but it's just nonsense. While it is true, for example, that mature skin can be dryer and develop skin conditions associated with age, it does not mean that all women over 50 will experience that. There are many older women who have oily skin prone to acne, for example, the richer creams targeted to this age group certainly wouldn't help them. More easy everyone's skin, no matter how old you are, is different and has different needs. You should use products that are designed to treat a skin concern you may have, no matter the age group they are targeting.
4. Natural ingredients are better and safer than the synthetic ones
there seems to be a general belief that everything in nature is automatically good while ingredients made in a laboratory must necessarily be bad for the skin. It is not true! There is absolutely no actual proof or scientific evidence to support the claim that natural ingredients are more secure and more efficient. In fact, the opposite is often the case. There are many natural substances that are bad for you as a gift, for example, the Ivy. In addition, natural ingredients to be more difficult to preserve and so more vulnerable to bacteria contamination. The truth is that cosmetic companies can not put toxic ingredients in their products. It is illegal. As for efficiency, it is just a natural ingredients that work well and others that do not, just as there are some synthetic ingredients that work well and others who do not. You should use products that contain ingredients that works well for your skin and their concerns, regardless of their origin.
5. Expensive skin care products work better than cheap ones
the effectiveness of a product depends on the formula, not the price. There are expensive products that are well formulated, just as there are others who promise to treat wrinkles or other concerns, but only have a basic formula that not much from moisturizing the skin, and even those that contain annoying or comedogenic ingredients. And the same can be said about the pharmacies skin care products. In addition, sometimes high-end and pharmacies are the marks owned by the same company. So when new ingredients are discovered, expensive brand will launch products with it first and then usually months later, a drugstore version will follow suit so you can get the same benefits at a more affordable price. By learning how to read ingredient lists, you will be able to tell which products, regardless of the brand, better formulated and so avoid spending money on those that just don't work.
